Anissa's strength is a wonder in itself. I didn't think Revalina S.Temat (of Pocong fame) could carry such a heavy character, but she could and successfully tear-jerking at that too. Oka Antara, (Saiful in Ayat-Ayat Cinta) acts as her childhood sweetheart and later became her husband was extremely influential and strong by himself as a character.
'Perempuan Berkalung Sorban' (Woman Laced with the Scarf) is a story about girls living in a pesantren (a madrasah equivalent in Indonesia, albeit a stricter one) who live ostracised lives from the world. Anissa has the strength and power to fight her father, a kiyai, and brothers who are of oldtime mindsets. She is then married off to Shamsudin, a hellish rogue disguised under sorban and faith. She suffered his emotional and physical abuse on her and then ran away, only to be caught khalwat with her childhood sweetheart, Khudori, an innocent man who truly loves her. Khudori was so understanding and so romantic as a husband! I think his character should be made examplary to every single man on the face of this Earth. To not be so chauvinistic, to be more selfless, to be filled with innocent, pure love, to be more understanding, to be unselfishly loving.

I particularly loved the note from Khudori to Anissa
'Jangan sebut aku perempuan sejati
jika hanya hidup berkalang lelaki
Tapi bukan berarti aku tidak butuh
lelaki untuk aku cintai'
But really, Anissa's fighting spirit, semangat perjuangannya demi prinsip hidupnya, is really extraordinary. Frankly, I can never be as strong as her. Her strength scares me to the extent that I think, is there such a woman so strong who is willing to oppose even her husband and father, which is generally unheard of in conservative communities? Maybe this film is a wake-up call. A much-needed wake-up call for all girls.
